As daylight starts to get shorter, mornings and evenings are very chilly, we are reminded that these are days where Autumn starts to feel like winter. Though afternoons are filled with sunshine, so do not be weary. The month of April is called Moranang in Setswana. It gets its name from the beans called moranang, which during this month ,they will be ready to be harvested and feasted upon as dikgobe (mixture of beans and corn cooked together) or nyebu (beans in their green stage before they dry off).
Due to climate change, winter has been creeping in earlier and earlier each year. Usually we are expecting winter in the months of May to July, not early April. So, let us make sure that when visiting Botswana in these months, you have a light jacket or sweater in hand to keep you warm.
Dip your toes in Tswana Culture
Although it will be a bit chilly, it is still comfortable enough to go for the safaris, boat cruising and an experience with the locals. One of our favorite activities is riding on a donkey cart that is used in the farms as a form of transportation ( transport wood, family around the villages and fetch water). If you are interested in understanding how some of the food is grown, and harvested, this is the best time to do so, as it is the harvesting season (corn, watermelons, sweet reed, sunflower) in farms (masimo). If this is an experience you are craving for, look no further and arrange with Authentic Botswana Tours to help you dip your toes in Tswana culture.
Major Events in Moranang (April)
Why not kick start the month off with creatives at Maitisong festival from the 14th to 30th of April. Where you can experience art through songs, dance, drama and poetry.
