The month of May is kgwedi ya Motsheganong in Setswana, celebrated as "letlhafula" harvesting time. In the villages, portions of food from the fields are collected and brought to a kgotla and blessed by the chief and shared with the community.This process is called dikgafela,thanksgiving for the harvest. And in the towns and cities, events are organized to share traditional food that were grown in the fields while wearing African attires, playing traditional games from childhood and giving gratitude for the rains that made it all possible. If you are in Maun during this time be sure to attend their own celebration of Letlhafula at Cresta on May 27th.
Speaking of activities for the month of May, ready yourself for a dive in meat galore at the annual Meat on Fire at Wharic Park in Gaborone on the 27th of May. Botswana has marked itself to be biggest contributor in the beef industry for the past decades and now it's on the rise locally with pork as the young farmers have ventured into rearing pigs commercially and on small scales. An experience to tour a farm can be arranged to enjoy some of the livestock farming available in Botswana.
